Q. How many continuing education hours do I need?
Opticians are required to obtain a minimum of 8 “accredited” continuing education hours each year (4 eyeglass hours and 4 contact lens hours) and 8 “self-directed hours.”
Optometrists are required to obtain a minimum of 70 hours of continuing education during each three-year cycle. Of the 70 hours, a minimum of 50 Category A hours and 20 Category A or B hours are required. Of the 50 Category A hours, a minimum of 20 hours must be on topics directly related to TPA’s. AOE obtains accreditation of their lectures from COPE. The Council on Optometric Practitioner Education (COPE), was created by the Association of Regulatory Boards of Optometry (ARBO) to accredit continuing education on behalf of optometric licensing boards. 52 licensing boards accept COPE accredited courses toward maintenance of licensure. COPE utilizes a standardized course submission process, together with a standardized administrator qualification process, to fulfill its mission.
Optometric Assistants are required to obtain a minimum of 18 hours of continuing education during each three-year cycle.
