Allan R. Slomovic, MA, MD, FRCSC

Dr. Slomovic has made refractive surgery an emphasis in his practice for over 15 years. During that time, he has gained extensive experience first in RK and later in both PRK and LASIK. He is known especially for his kind, warm manner and reassuring demeanor when dealing with patients. His strong desire for excellence makes him fit in perfectly with the mission and goals of the center, where patient care comes first.

To meet the challenges of practice, Dr. Slomovic brings over two decades of study and experience. Originally trained as a clinical psychologist, Dr. Slomovic decided to pursue a medical career and subsequently received his M.D. from Memorial University in Newfoundland. He then went to Montreal for his internship and to the New York University School of Medicine for a residency in Ophthalmology. Dr. Slomovic chose Ophthalmology as a specialty because "It is such a clean, precise and rewarding occupation." He also appreciates the rapid improvement in vision enjoyed by most patients after surgery.

Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Slomovic decided to pursue more intensive studies into the cornea (the clear window at the front of the eye). He was accepted as a Clinical Fellow in Cornea and External Ocular Disease at the internationally regarded Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami. He then completed a second fellowship at Bascom Palmer - this one in Ophthalmic Laser Microsurgery. Dr. Slomovic enjoys corneal surgery because "this is the area of the eye where surgeries produce the highest rates of success."

Moving to Toronto after his fellowships, Dr. Slomovic is a faculty member at the University of Toronto where he was Director of Residency training, in charge of training Canadian Ophthalmologists. He also serves as Clinical Director of the Cornea Unit at the University Health Network. He is committed to thorough ophthalmic research, principally into corneal issues, and has published numerous articles in international professional journals. He has also presented at ophthalmology conferences worldwide and is the President of the Canadian Cornea and External Disease Society.

When he is taking a break from his professional responsibilities, Dr. Slomovic enjoys spending time with his wife, Rhona, and their daughters, Alana and Jaclyn. Dr. Slomovic also enjoys outdoor activities such as bicycling, walking, hiking and skiing.
