Jonathan Tijerina

MD, MA

Dr. Jonathan D. Tijerina, MD, MA, is currently Glaucoma Senior Faculty at Henry Ford Health Systems in Detroit, Michigan. He was previously a Glaucoma Fellow at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute/Anne Bates Leach Eye Hospital at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida. He was selected to be the institute's inaugural Chief Resident of Anterior Segment and Ophthalmic Trauma in the year prior to fellowship. Dr. Tijerina earned his MD from the Stanford University School of Medicine and his BS and an MA in Biology from Baylor University. He completed his internship at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida and his residency at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Florida Ophthalmological Society, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the American Glaucoma Society. Dr. Tijerina has as special interest in creative problem solving, ophthalmic imaging and surgical technique development. He was awarded a Heed Ophthalmic Foundation fellowship and Bascom Palmer's Outstanding Researcher Award as both a resident and fellow for his work on closing capsular bag defects and novel IOL scleral fixation methods. He has also been invited to speak internationally about this original iris hook insertion technique after winning the Young CURSO surgical film festival and was awarded the Raey of Hope Award after winning the 2026 ASCRS Surgical Video Competition. He has had multiple images featured on the cover of Ophthalmology, is a current Doximity Clinical Case Fellow and has contributed to two ophthalmic atlases in addition to publishing numerous original peer-reviewed research.
