Michael Zhao

Dr. Michael Y. Zhao is an ophthalmology resident physician in Miami, Florida, completing his training at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. He earned his medical degree from McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. Before that, he studied biology at the University of Texas at Austin as a member of the Dean's Scholars Honors Program, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. During medical school, Dr. Zhao was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism honor societies, which recognize academic excellence and humanistic patient care. His clinical and research interests center on vitreoretinal disease, especially infectious endophthalmitis, retinal detachment and retinal imaging. He has co-authored more than 25 peer-reviewed publications in journals including Ophthalmology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and Ophthalmology Retina. He has presented his work at ARVO and at the J. Donald M. Gass Fellowship Society Meeting. His research has earned the Chinese American Ophthalmological Society Resident Research Award and the Distinguished Contributor Award from the Journal of Vitreo Retinal Diseases.
